

It played a DVD but not Blu-ray before the hard reset. I had been through all the disks for games but hadn't tried DVDs or Blu-rays until tonight. Got all this from going through the xbox assist troubleshooter about my game discs not being read. Probably also scrambled something on-board about the proprietary system that decodes the game disks. My working hypothesis of root cause is that a power zap or something like that happened the night before and scrambled the brains of my router. That seems to sent it through a harsher start up process because I heard the spin up and get read more than before. That was then followed by starting it up again using the same button.

What it took was a complete power down of the console using the button on the box (hold for 10 seconds). the World - that just a little while ago it wouldn't play. It is now reading my Diablo III game disk.
